Mammoth Lakes is home to more than just thrill seekers looking for the rush of fresh snow in the mountains or looking to fly down some trails on a mountain bike. With countless places to observe some of the most breathtaking views in the country, Mammoth Lakes fall colors are truly a sight to behold.
With no shortage of things to see, you will want to ensure you choose the right Mammoth Lakes condo rental close to all the action. Don’t worry; we have got you covered with some awesome choices, close to some of the best places to see fall colors in Mammoth Lakes.
Mammoth Lakes Fall Colors
The best time to visit Mammoth Lakes fall colors is mid-September through October. At this point, the leaves will begin to turn a fantastic assortment of gold, orange, and red. With five distinct forest ecosystems in Mammoth Lakes, there is no shortage of fall foliage to observe. Some of the most prevalent trees that you will see are aspens, cottonwoods, alders, and willows.
With the leaves changing color at the highest elevations first, there is some equipment that you may need to truly take in the fall experience during your visit!
What to Bring
While it is always a good time to go for a hike, Mammoth Lakes fall activities sometimes require some added equipment for more technical trails or just a little added protection from the wet and cold temperatures.
As the elevation increases, the temperatures decrease. It is always a good idea to have a good pair of gloves on when hiking to see the changing leaves. Like the gloves, you will want a good jacket to help protect you from the wet and cold. We recommend a lightweight, insulated jacket to help keep you warm, but be sure to dress in layers so that you can add or subtract clothing based on the weather while you are hiking up to the fall colors.
As the weather gets wetter in the fall, it is always a good idea to pack an extra dry shirt or socks. With elevation changes the weather can sometimes change quickly, and it is always a good idea to be prepared with multiple layers to stay comfortable.

Trails
With so many great trails, it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming when planning your fall trip to Mammoth Lakes. Once you prepare your equipment, here are three trails we highly recommend you check out to capture some of the best fall views.
Heart Lake Trail
Arguably one of the most popular trails in Mammoth Lakes, this easy-to-moderate trail will take you through dense clusters of colorful aspen trees. A simple out-and-back trail, Heart Lake Trail is uphill on the way out and all downhill on the way back, so don’t worry if your legs are a little tired once you reach the turn-around point.
While hiking this trail, visit the Mammoth Consolidated Mine Site. Mammoth Lakes and the Inyo National Forest are home to many archeological and historical sites. These unique sites are amazing to see and hold a gateway to our past, showing us what life was like.
Shadow Creek Trail
A little more involved than Heart Lake Trail, plan for an entire half-day hike out and back when you tackle the Shadow Creek Trail. Taking you through some giant, beautiful aspen trees, don’t let the distance of this trail deter you.
The trail will take you through the Ansel Adams Wilderness, along the river, and a patch of beautiful aspens, where you will find yourself looking at an amazing view of the grove from above.
Although the trail is longer, it is mostly flat, making it a very peaceful hike to see fall colors.
Mammoth Rock Trail Connector
Constructed in 2017, this relatively new trail offers some amazing views of the area. This trail has a gentle rise from the Sherwins Trailhead before it connects with the Mammoth Rock Trail.
At just .9 miles long, the Mammoth Rock Trail Connector is an excellent choice for those that want to take in the fall colors with a magnificent view of a sunset or sunrise while not traveling large distances.
